SYNOPSIS
Armed with video cameras, 32 students from across Canada travel to the Balkans seeking that often-elusive goal: "to make the world a more peaceful place."
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE is an emotional feature-length documentary that records what is often the most memorable event in a student's life, a journey to a foreign land.
The inspiration for the trip came from a screening of Teaching Peace in a Time of War, a film that documents the efforts of Hetty Van Gurp as she encourages teachers and students to seek peaceful ways of dealing with conflict in schools affected by war in Serbia. The Canadian youth were deeply moved by the Serbian children as they grieved over the lack of peace in their lives.

ABOUT HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
Armed with video cameras, thirty-two students from across Canada travel to the Balkans seeking that often-elusive goal: "to make the world a more peaceful place."
"The main thing I learned through this experience is that all over the world, everybody is the same. Of course there are different languages and cultures but people's good will and kind nature always show up stronger. There will always be assumptions and false stories about different places and people but this trip showed me that to gain a non-bias opinion about something you have to either experience it or witness it first hand."
BEHIND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
The inspiration for the documentary came from a screening of Teaching Peace in a Time of War, a film that documents the efforts of Hetty Van Gurp as she encourages teachers and students to seek peaceful ways of dealing with conflict in schools affected by war in Serbia. Many of the students had never before traveled outside of Canada and some were fearful of Serbia's reputation as "the bully of the Balkans." Undaunted, they named themselves Students for Teaching Peace and enthusiastically set off to "make a difference." www.ctv.ca
THE JURY SPEAKS!
"I really, really liked the show. It was the best documentary I have ever seen. It really is an inspiring documentary that everyone my age should watch because you can learn from it."
"Hope for the Future is like watching an experience on television. A load of teens go around and shoot something that then is produced into a really special piece of documentary work, was very impressive and completely compelling from beginning to end. So much so that I took the DVD and walked it down to the office of my Head of Programming for Teens at AOL and I handed it to her and I said, 'You've got to watch this,' because it's incredibly impressive, the way it was done."
International Juror
A WORD FROM TERESA MACINNES, PRODUCER
"Hope for the Future is one of the most rewarding film projects we have been involved with, mostly because it was motivated by youth. It was their idea to go on the trip, to record the process, to raise the money, and to extend hope and peace to the youth of Serbia. We had the pleasure of being their mentors and documenting the entire magical adventure. During these times of great conflict in the world, they truly do give us hope for the future. "

TERESA MACINNES ON THE PRIZE
We are thrilled to be nominated for the Shaw Rocket Prize. There is so little encouragement to produce programs for youth and this initiative demonstrates that their voice is valued and that the work we have done to present it is appreciated. The proof of the Rocket Fund's commitment to youth programming is in the process itself. Having Hope for the Future seen by an international jury and then toured in Canadian schools is such a great opportunity for us and for the youth watching! We continue to work with the young people who were involved in Hope for the Future, only this time the next film will be directed by the them. This nomination has motivated us and the Students For Teaching Peace video teams to keep up the struggle to tell youth stories!
